As Brad Pitt said in the movie Moneyball, “How can you not be romantic about baseball?”
Scream. Cry. Laugh. Rejoice. Get the champagne. Get the beer. Fly the W because the Chicago Cubs are heading back to the World Series. I, for one, cannot fucking wait to watch this magic happen.
The Cubs won three straight to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS 4-2 and are heading to their first World Series since 1945. It has been 71 long years for that franchise and their loyal fans.
It has been an even longer 108 years since the Cubs actually won it all. The last time the Cubs won a World Series, there were only 46 states. Sliced bread wasn’t around. The Titanic hadn’t been built. The NFL didn’t even exist. Needless to say, it has been a long time.
Growing up a Saints fan, I have always said I would trade three Superbowls for the black and gold to see one Cubs World Series win. That fan base and franchise deserve this more than anything and I pray to the baseball gods that it happens for them.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the magic unfold because I was busy attending one of my best friend’s wedding.
As I watched the highlight of the double play that punched the ticket for the Cubs first World Series in 71 years, tears filled my eyes, chills down my spine and the inevitable smile slowly made its way across my face.
After the win, a reporter spoke with an elderly Cubs fan named Dorothy Farrell. She has been sitting in the front row at Wrigley since 1984 and said she planned on celebrating with some Jagermeister. Go get em’ Dorothy. You are amazing!
This Cubs team is amazing and everything about the Cubs going to the World Series is amazing.
