2019 is almost in the books and why not do my own awards to recap the year? Sounds like a fun time to me. Here we go. I will dive into some of the best in movies, TV, pop culture, sports and more.
Movies/TV
Best Movie – Threat Level Midnight
MICHAEL SCARN SAVES THE WORLD! If you lived under a rock about 2-3 weeks ago. Threat Level Midnight created by Michael Scott was released on YouTube! 4.5 million views later, it was one of the biggest hits in 2019.
The Irishman
Just kidding about Threat Level Midnight although it was great. Netflix hit gold with this one. It was great seeing all the OGs of mobster movies like Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino back in those seats. It was a 3.5 hour masterpiece.
Best Performance – Joaquin Phoenix
Phoenix’s rendition of the Joker was mind numbing. It was the inner workings of a mad man and he absolutely killed it. That performance is going to be talked about for years I believe. From start to finish, his performance kept you on edge of when he would snap. It was sick, twisted and maniacal.
Best TV Show – Game of Thrones
Despite the final season for the Iron Throne being shit on, it still gets the nod for best show. If for nothing else, arguably the greatest series of all time concluded.
Best TV Show Character – Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion was a major player in GOT from start to finish. He finished the series (spoiler alert) as Hand of the King. A title he was good at and a title he earned. He also ended the show by starting his jackass and a brothel joke. He will forever be one of my favorite characters in TV show history. So many great monologues from the half man.
Music and Pop Culture
Best Slang Term – Weird Flex But Ok
It is easily one of the most dickhead things to say. I use it religiously once people start bragging about random shit.
Best Couple – Dustin and Suzie (Stranger Things)
Suzie, do you copy?!? Although their screen time together wasn’t long, it was magical. The two of them had the ultimate power ballad belting out Neverending Story and all of us lost our minds over it.
Best Meme – Ight Imma Head Out (Spongebob)
Ight Imma Head Out.
Best Bromance – The Rock and Kevin Hart
Is this even a debate? Those two go hard at each other on social media making fun of one another. It is what makes a great bromance. If you can’t make fun of your best friend, then what the hell is the fun in being best friends?
Best Artist – Brendon Urie
Although Pray for the Wicked was dropped in 2018, songs like high hopes and hey look ma I made it have been featured in the world of sports among other things in 2019. On top of that, his music was featured in Frozen II and ME with Taylor Swift goes hard. Urie is the man.
Best Song – Sunflower
Again another thing released in 2018 that had long running success in 2019. The song is as feel good as it gets. It is just a dope vibe, great lyrics and a lot of fun to sing.
Best Quote – “We’re all different. And I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK that we’re all different. When I say be kind to one another, I don’t mean be kind to the people who think the same way you do. I mean be kind to everyone.” – Ellen DeGeneres
After people shit on Ellen for laughing with George W. Bush at a Dallas Cowboys game, the internet let her have it. She responded with this amazing quote on her show shortly after. I love Ellen for so many reasons and this quote is one of them. It is a quote I agree with wholeheartedly. I’m surrounded by friends who think nothing like me and I love them for that. It is important to get different perspectives. It is one of the biggest elements to human growth. That being said, if someone ignorantly can’t defend their stance, go after them about it. That doesn’t mean attack their character but call out their bullshit. Unfortunately, some people take that as not being kind. It is our duty to be informed. If you’re not, I am not the person who stands by and lets you be just that.
Best Video Game – Call of Duty Modern Warfare
Although I haven’t dove into Star Wars Fallen Order yet so I could have a different answer in a few days here. The new installment of COD has been the most I have played the series since MW3.
Sports
Best Athlete – Joe Burrow / Lamar Jackson
I honestly couldn’t decide between them. Not selecting either of them would feel like a major misfire. They have lit up the college and professional landscape of football. Burrow is maybe having the best season of any college football player in the last decade or two. Meanwhile, Jackson’s unconventional style is dominating the NFL. He is going to be a dead runaway for MVP.
Best Wrestler – Cody Rhodes
I could have put Jon Moxley or Chris Jericho here easily. However, I went with the guy who was the main catalyst in launching AEW. This is the first time in years it looks like WWE has real competition. I am giving the nod to the guy who went from undesirable to un-goddamn-deniable.
Best Game – (NBA) Trail Blazers and Thunder Game 5
Dame Over baby. That was a buzzer beater and celebration for the ages. Even though it was early in the series, it was one of the most biblical send offs in recent memory. Russell Westbrook ran his mouth (which I like in sports) and Lillard shut it real quick.
Best Team – LSU Football
I hate giving the nod here. But damn, it is hard to deny them the title of best team. The resume they ran through and now they are one game away from a perfect season. How bout dem Tigahs babayyy (Coach O voice).
Best Comeback – Washington Nationals Entire Season
When you go down into a hole the way the Nationals did last season and not only comeback to make the postseason, but win the entire thing…remarkable. It reminds me of Major League when Jake Taylor says to the clubhouse that there is only one thing left to do, “win the whole fucking thing.” They move on from arguably the biggest star in baseball, Bryce Harper, and then win. Just wow.
Best Moment – Megan Rapinoe Goal and Celebration
I don’t care who reads this and gets pissed. I said it while it was going on and I will say it again, Megan Rapinoe has been one of my favorite athletes since I first saw her in the World Cup of 2011. I love her style of play and I love her brash and outspoken attitude. One thing I love watching is an athlete overcome the noise and backlash through the echo chamber. When she scored on that free kick against France, she runs to sideline and throws her arms up to metaphorically say “I am right fucking here.” I loved every second of it. It is the ultimate middle finger to everyone who trashed her including President Trump. It is easy to be confident when you have people in your corner. How will you respond when they aren’t anymore? She responded. That image from that World Cup is something I will remember for the rest of my life just like the Brandi Chastain celebration.
Best Coach – Tim Rebowe, Nicholls Football
Nicholls needs to change the intersection heading to the field house to Tim Lane and Rebowe Drive because anyone who crosses Tim Rebowe dies. What he has done with Nicholls the last five years is un-freaking-believable. They captured their second Southland Conference Title in a row and notched another playoff dub. This year they went to Fargo and punched NDSU in the mouth and hung with the most dominant team in FCS. Although they lost, they covered the spread and made them sweat until late in the third when NDSU pulled away. People need to know the impact and what he has done in little old Thibodaux, Louisiana. Geaux Colonels.
Best Things to Launch in 2019
Disney Plus
Activate childhood. Disney Plus is amazing. I have spent hours watching Hannah Montana, Even Stevens, Bug Juice and Lizzie McGuire plus all the DCOMs and other movies available. Worth every single penny.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW)
I jumped off the WWE train a while ago and I was picked up by AEW along the way. They have only been on TV for a few short months, but damn if I haven’t been impacted by it. I love that I can just sit down and enjoy wrestling again and not worry about the company I am watching royally screw it up. The storytelling, matches and characters keep me entertained. Not to say it is perfect, but it is much better than the other options by a mile.
Do It All Marketing
Launching my own business has been a roller coaster of emotions. But, I enjoy what I do. I enjoy helping my friends with their business and I enjoy working for myself. I hope 2020 brings a fruitful year for business.
Fat Boys Pizza
Literally, my favorite freaking restaurant. One, it is pizza. The godsend of the universe. Again, supporting business for people I know is something I feel strong about. Not only do I support it for that, but the food is incredible and the service and atmosphere is the best. There is a reason Fat Boys Fridays became a thing.
Galaxy’s Edge (Disney World)
I cannot wait to go back and ride Rise of the Resistance. But, we did get to go and check out the new section in Disney. The Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run was amazeballs. The ride itself is fantastic. The architecture of everything is of course unbelievable because Disney, dude. One of the things I tell all my friends to try is the Green or Blue Milk. Tastes amazing.
